FamilyLegacy Book
30 copies
Over time, certain places can become inseparable from family history. A home, a landscape, a familiar destination or a shared tradition may acquire meaning far beyond the place itself.
This project is conceived as an opportunity to identify and preserve those connections, bringing personal material, family stories and a sense of place together within a lasting editorial volume.
What this book is
intended to preserve.
Based on the initial brief, the proposed volume would explore a family's connection to Highlands and Cashiers, North Carolina, bringing personal history and sense of place together through a carefully developed editorial narrative.
Five concerns shape the commission.
A private family story, approached with the editorial care of a beautifully published volume.
Depending on what emerges during discovery, the volume may bring together family photography, archival material, recipes, personal stories, selected places and regional history within a cohesive editorial narrative of approximately one hundred pages.
The work goes beyond page design. It includes the editorial decisions that give a book structure and rhythm: what belongs together, what deserves space, how stories are introduced, how historical context is integrated and how the reader moves through the volume.
A possible shape
for the narrative.
Eight possible editorial movements illustrating how the material could be structured. The final sequence and emphasis will emerge through discovery.
The final architecture will be developed after discovery.
Highlands and Cashiers can provide more than a backdrop to the family narrative.
Selected aspects of the region’s history, landscape and character may be introduced where they add context to the personal story. Old Edwards Inn, Half-Mile Farm, GlenCove and any additional locations would be researched according to their relevance to the family.
The objective is not to create a conventional regional history. Historical material would be concise, atmospheric and carefully integrated, allowing place and personal history to exist naturally within the same narrative.
The materials
that may shape the book.
During discovery, The Timeless Concept will identify what personal material is available and what may contribute meaningfully to the book. Potential materials may include the categories below.
Material would be reviewed and curated during discovery. Digitization requirements, where relevant, would be determined according to the material available.
The most distinctive editorial details often emerge from personal materials that exist nowhere else.
A family recipe can carry more than ingredients and instructions. Where a personal history accompanies it, food can become another way of telling a family story.
Selected recipes may be accompanied by the person, occasion, place, season or tradition associated with them, where that information exists and the family wishes to include it.
Where no additional story is relevant, the recipe can simply be presented beautifully in its own right. The final selection and treatment would be established during discovery.
A quiet, timeless
sense of place.
The title of the finished volume should emerge from discovery and, ideally, from language that is authentic to the family.
A glimpse inside the book.
A conceptual preview of how place, history, home, family material and personal traditions may come together within the finished volume.
Personal & collected.
At the table.
Recipes may become part of the family narrative, bringing together food, tradition and personal context where those connections exist.
Legacy.
The most personal pages will ultimately be shaped by the photographs, stories and materials the family chooses to preserve.

The project may draw from existing family photography and archival material, subject to review during discovery. New photography is not included in the base creative scope. If new photography of the home, landscape, selected locations, interiors, objects, recipes or family members is considered beneficial, it can be developed and quoted separately.
Five stages.
The discovery phase establishes the foundation for everything that follows. At this stage, the family, available materials and editorial priorities are explored so that the narrative and visual direction can be developed with precision.

This commission encompasses the complete creative and editorial development of a bespoke family legacy book of up to 100 designed pages.
The work extends far beyond book design. The Timeless Concept will develop the editorial vision, narrative architecture and visual language of the volume, bringing together family material, photography, archival content, recipes, personal stories, selected places and regional history within one carefully considered publication.
Every element of the book will be approached as part of a larger narrative, from the sequence of chapters and rhythm of individual spreads to the relationship between photography, written material, archival elements and the physical object itself.
The commission covers the complete development of the volume, up to 100 designed pages, from initial discovery through final production-ready artwork.
It includes the creative and editorial thinking required to transform a collection of photographs, stories, places, recipes, archival material and historical context into a cohesive book with its own identity.

No two family legacy books are developed in the same way.
The final volume will be shaped by what emerges through discovery: the family material that exists, the stories considered important to preserve, the places that carry particular significance and the relationship between personal history and the landscape of Highlands and Cashiers.
For this reason, the work is developed as an original editorial commission rather than from a predetermined template. The pages are conceived as a complete narrative, with each chapter and spread designed in relation to the book as a whole.
Physical production is estimated separately from the Creative & Editorial Commission. Based on the preliminary specifications currently envisioned for the project, production of approximately 30 premium hardcover books is expected to fall within the range above.
The estimate assumes a high-quality, full-color hardcover publication of approximately 100 pages, with premium paper and photographic reproduction. The final cost will depend on the format, paper selection, binding method, cover material and finishing details selected for the edition.
The final production quotation will be presented for approval before printing begins.
Shipping, insurance, applicable taxes and extraordinary specialty finishes are not included in this preliminary estimate.
If new photography of the family home, landscape, interiors, meaningful locations, recipes, objects or family members is considered beneficial following discovery, the photographic direction and production can be developed and quoted separately.
Cloth or specialty cover materials, foil stamping, embossing or debossing, custom endpapers, sewn binding, specialty papers, slipcases, presentation boxes and other bespoke finishing details will be evaluated during production development. Depending on the final combination selected, certain specialty finishes may increase the preliminary production estimate.
The final 20% balance is due prior to delivery of final production files. This schedule applies to the Creative & Editorial Commission of US$24,800 only. Physical book production is estimated and invoiced separately.
The Creative & Editorial Commission covers a final book of up to 100 designed pages. Should the editorial discovery process lead to a larger volume, additional pages may be developed at US$250 per page, subject to approval before the additional work begins.
The commission includes up to two consolidated rounds of editorial and design revisions following presentation of the complete first design. To ensure that the volume develops as a cohesive narrative, consolidated feedback should be provided through one nominated representative.
Travel, shipping, insurance, applicable taxes, specialist scanning or restoration, image licensing, archival reproduction fees and other approved third-party expenses, if required, are separate from the Creative & Editorial Commission.

The story begins with discovery.
Following acceptance of the proposal, The Timeless Concept begins with an editorial discovery phase, in order to understand:
A family home, a landscape, a recipe, a photograph or a familiar destination can carry stories long after the moment itself has passed.
This book is conceived as a way of bringing those stories together. Thoughtfully researched, carefully edited and beautifully preserved, it is intended to create a lasting record of the people, places and traditions the family chooses to preserve.
